National City Bank is again offering some attractive CD and money market specials. You now can get a CD with a yield of 5.25% APY on a term of 36 months. More details are provided at this National City CD promotion page, but this doesn’t list all of the terms. Here’s some more details:
Certificate of Deposit Specials for $10K minimum:
- 4.25% APY 13 to 18 months
- 5.00% APY 19 to 35 months
- 5.25% APY 36 to 54 months
Money Market Savings Special:
- 4.00% APY guaranteed for 180 days on $5,000 or more of new money
These have the typical National City requirement of an existing checking or savings account or a new checking (except Free checking) with a $1,500 minimum initial deposit. Without the checking account, the CD rates are 25 basis points lower. Also, the rates for a $2,500 minimum deposit are 20 basis points lower.

Banco Popular is offering a special 60-month CD with a yield of 4.75% APY. The minimum deposit is $1,000 for a regular CD and a $500 minimum for an IRA CD. There are also shorter term CD specials, but these are less competitive. These include a 3.75% APY 24-month CD and a 2.85% APY 4-month CD.
Branches are located in California, Illinois, New Jersey, New York and Texas. The bank is a member FDIC.

Alliant Credit Union lowered rates on its savings account and certificates today, but the rates remain very competitive. The savings account yield fell from 4.35% to 4.00% APY. The top yield on their 12-to-17 month certificate fell from 4.40% APY to 4.15% APY. This requires a minimum deposit of $25,000. However, the yield for the $1,000 minimum remained the same at 4.00% APY. The yield for $25K minimum deposits remained the same for the longer terms (4.15% APY). The yield for the $1K minimum deposits actually increased from 3.75% to 4.00% APY.
Branches are located in Chicago, Des Plaines, and Elk Grove Township, Illinois. There are also branches in Colorado, California and Virginia. It’s a large credit union with $4.9 billion in assets and 211,631 members.

Wells Fargo currently has a special online certificate of deposit promotion with a 4.40% APY and 5 month term. Minimum deposit on this CD is $5,000.
The rest of Wells Fargo’s C.D.s aren’t that impressive, with CD rates ranging from 2.00% to 3.45%, and minimum deposits up to $10,000.
However, it may be more convenient for you to get a Wells Fargo CD if you already do most of your banking with this bank.

Countrywide bank currently has the highest CD rate available in the 6 month certificate category, with a 5.30% APY. They also offer 5.25% for 3 month CDs and 5.10% for 1 year CDs. Minimum deposit on all CDs is $10,000.
In addition, Countrywide Bank also has a high 5.00% APY interest rate on their SavingsLink account. Minimum balance on this account is $250.

Bank of America is offering a 4 month short term certificate of deposit that has rates ranging from 4.95% APY to 5.25% APY, depending on which state you’re in. Here are some of the rates for various states:

5.10% APY at TX, CA, CO, IN, OH, VA, NC, GA, WI,

Bank of Internet has one of the highest rates for the 18 month CD bracket, with a 5.06% APY. They used to have higher rates, but after the recent fed rate cuts they’ve dropped their rates across the board. Their certificate of deposits feature:
- $1000 minimum to open
- No fees
- Compounded Daily
- Paid Monthly, Into Account, By Check or Wired to Your Checking Account
- Certificate accounts can be opened up to a maximum of $100,000
CDs renew automatically at maturity for the same term at the rate in effect at the time. If you don’t want to renew, you have a 10-day grace period to let Bank of Internet know online, by phone or in writing. For more information on their certificates, check out their sign up page.
